Project idea

The project, titled "Non-Standard Path," is a community revitalization practice focused on the Tibei Community in Tianjin. It addresses a prevalent social anxiety in northern Chinese cities: the pressure to conform to a "standard answer" in life. Recognizing that traditional community spaces no longer satisfy the diverse, fragmented needs of modern residents, this project aims to utilize parametric methods to construct a "free-growing," non-standardized spatial system. The objective is to encourage individual expression and reconstruct emotional connections within the rigid urban fabric.

Project description

The design utilizes AI-driven Natural Language Processing (NLP) to extract specific spatial demands from 335 resident interviews across four age groups: children, youth, adults, and elders. The solution consists of 20 types of functional modular units, such as breakfast stalls, flower shops, mobile clinics, study rooms, and shared kitchens. These colorful, "free-growing" modules are inserted between existing buildings to break homogenized spatial logic. The project also features an elevated ground-floor plaza and a rooftop garden, transforming the old, closed compound into a vibrant, open-access community hub.

Technical information

The project employs parametric generative design, evaluating multiple formal options based on "scattering factors" and scoring them for aesthetics, function, and accessibility. Structurally, it uses a slender steel column system to downplay the support structure and emphasize the independence of each unit. All functional units are prefabricated for efficient transportation and on-site assembly, minimizing construction disruption. The design further integrates a vertical circulation core and steel supports extending from the original structures to form a cohesive new vertical system.
